Happy Gilmore is a very odd film, and a pretty elderly one at that. It’s basically a sports comedy about a washed-up hockey player (played by Adam Sandler) switching to golf that first made its theatrical debut in February 1996. And yet, despite mixed critical reception, it achieved quite a bit of commercial success and even an MTV award. In fact, the film attained cult status in the following years, particularly among the golf community. It’s so famous that the film is even going to get a very belated sequel simply titled Happy Gilmore 2 that will make its theatrical debut on July 25, 2025. Clearly, Gilmore has earned his place in the realm of gold comedy, of which there is very few entries to contend with.
That cult status and the upcoming sequel might very well be responsible for our current bit of news. Universal Pictures has just announced that they are doing a theatrical re-release of the original Happy Gilmore. These special screenings will take place nationwide here in the US on April 27 and April 30, 2025. In fact, you can purchase tickets for that re-release right now from Fandango.
Happy Gilmore Getting Nationwide Re-Release Just Months Before Sequel
Admittedly, this is probably something we should’ve expected. With Happy Gilmore 2 just over three months away from release as of this writing, it’s not hard to see why Universal Pictures would want to promote that sequel. And really, what better way to promote it than to give a screening of the first film? Heck, this might be a chance for you to experience that first film in theaters just as the original theater-goers did in 1996. All to hype you up for that sequel.
